What happens when you try to recreate the world of Vincent van Gogh as an interactive experience? The Story of: Van Gogh is not just a game it’s an actual development experiment designed to test the limits of storytelling, immersion, and historical recreation in interactive media.
Unlike traditional game projects, The Story of: Van Gogh has no guaranteed outcome. This is an open experiment where we push the boundaries of what’s possible for our studio, learning as we go. The project may evolve, change direction, or even remain unfinished what matters is what we discover along the way.
What are we experimenting?
1. Can We Accurately Recreate a Living Painting?
We aim to explore whether it’s possible to fully immerse players in Van Gogh’s world, allowing them to experience his art beyond the canvas. From the Dutch village of Nuenen to the environments that shaped his masterpieces, we want to see if we can translate his vision into an explorable, interactive space.
2. Can Interactive Media Convey Mental and Emotional States?
Van Gogh’s story is deeply tied to his struggles with mental health. Through interactive storytelling, we will explore how game mechanics, visual effects, and environmental storytelling can communicate emotion and psychology in ways traditional media cannot.
3. How Far Can We Push Realism and Historical Accuracy?
Using primary sources, letters, and historical records, we will test the feasibility of creating a historically accurate and emotionally engaging world that reflects Van Gogh’s life and art. This will also serve as a research exercise for potential museum collaborations and cultural studies.
4. Can This Project Even Be Finished?
Since this is an experiment, we are not committing to a finished game. This project will evolve based on our findings, technical challenges, and creative breakthroughs. Whether we succeed, pivot, or abandon the project, it will serve as a learning experience for our studio, shaping future projects and pushing our technical capabilities forward.
